Avacus supports multiple blockchain networks, including Ethereum. While these networks are all EVM-compatible, each has different mechanisms and characteristics. This article explains the differences between the networks supported by Avacus.
What Are Layer 1 and Layer 2?
As a starting point, blockchain networks can broadly be divided into "Layer 1" and "Layer 2."
- Layer 1: An independent blockchain that operates on its own. Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain are examples.
- Layer 2: A system that processes transactions on a separate network and records the results or data on Ethereum, reducing the load on Ethereum and enabling faster, lower-cost processing. Optimism and Arbitrum One are examples.
Features of Each Network
Ethereum
A major Layer 1 network. It has a large ecosystem of developers and DApps, but gas fees can increase significantly when the network is congested.
BNB Smart Chain
A Layer 1 network provided by Binance. It uses PoSA (Proof of Staked Authority), a consensus mechanism that combines elements of PoS and authority-based validation. Because the number of validators is limited, it enables fast processing and low gas fees.
Polygon PoS
A network that operates alongside Ethereum and uses its own PoS (Proof of Stake) consensus mechanism. It is a type of network known as a sidechain. Because it has its own validation mechanism, it operates under a security model that differs from Ethereum itself.
Optimism
A network built on Ethereum that uses Optimistic Rollup technology, a type of Layer 2 technology. Transactions are processed in batches on a separate network from Ethereum, with the results and data recorded on Ethereum, enabling faster and lower-cost processing. When using the standard bridge to withdraw to Ethereum itself, a confirmation period of approximately 7 days is required.
Arbitrum One
A Layer 2 network that, like Optimism, uses Optimistic Rollup technology. It is known for its high compatibility with existing Ethereum tools and smart contracts. When using the standard bridge to withdraw to Ethereum itself, a confirmation period is required.
